Durham Cathedral Sanctuary Knocker
The Sanctuary knocker from the north door of the cathedral is made in the form of a lion's head. It is a fine piece of Normanesque work and is thought to date from 1154. Fugitives from the law using this knocker were allowed to take sanctuary and confess their crimes before being allowed to leave the country without fear of arrest
No 10 Downing Street Knocker
The door knocker represents the British Imperial Lion,
Downing Street Door Knocker symbol of the great empire, which for two and a half centuries was governed from Downing Street. The first lion's head knocker was installed circa 1766 and was made in cast iron. Subsequently it was replaced with a brass knocker, which was painted black to resemble its original. Imagine the numerous historical figures who have helped shape the world we live in using this very knocker before entering and meeting the Prime Minister of the day.
Made half its original size 7.5” x 4”, makes the perfect gift for weddings and housewarmings
